In order to discuss my breastfeeding journey I need to discuss my pregnancy. My pregnancy wasn’t planned but was the best thing to ever happen to me. After being hospitalized due to my BP I was induced due to potentially developing hellp syndrome at 29 weeks. After 3 days I gave birth to my son at 29 3/7 weeks. From there he spent 72 days in the Nicu. While hospitalized they asked me if I planned to breastfeed and I said yes if I can (I had a breast reduction in 2018). I wasn’t able to breastfeed given how little my son was but I was able to pump. In the hospital I got my first little bit of colostrum. Prior to this I didn’t even think about pumping whatsoever but for 72 days I was pumping every 2-3 hours round the clock to feed my baby. Then once he was discharged I continued to pump. Flash forward to today, I pump at least 7 times a day and I am able to breastfeed my baby once a day. I love pumping and breastfeeding to feed my baby and watch him grow. I am always trying to find new pumps so I can better assist others as to what pumps work best or could work for them and I am always looking for a better pump for on the go.
In the beginning I was so nervous for people to see me pump in public because of the stigma and stereotype of breastfeeding in public and the whole debate surrounding it. However, I am now beyond confident in doing so as I am covered whether I pump or breastfeed and I am feeding my baby. It is what women were designed to do. We were designed to care and nurture and feed our babies no matter if it’s through pumping, breastfeeding, or even formula.
World breastfeeding week has empowered me to help other moms and share my story.
Thank you kissbobo for doing this and honoring this week in the best way possible.
